expertise

In the world of string instruments expertise relates to having the know-how to determine the origin and age of an instrument or bow. It goes without saying that both the quality and the required time of an expertise depends a lot on the amount of  readily available know-how of the expert.

The determination of the origin of an instrument is still based on stylistic criteria. This means based on the model, details of workmanship, varnish, used materials and techniques.

Some instruments or bows can be attributed at first sight to a certain maker or school, but sometimes intelligent copies, restorations, replacement of lost parts, or even counterfeit, do not make it easy to come to a proper understanding of the origin and age and a correct judgement.

In addition to our own knowledge, (photographic) memory and archive, today many other techniques are available, like U.V.-light and age research by means of annual rings in the pine of the top (dendrochronology). However, these modern techniques are helpful, but they only help to exclude certain attributions. There is no trick that simply tells us the origin of an instrument. However, modern digital photography together with email, makes it easier to consult a collegue-expert and also many good publications and international exhibitions help us to maintain high standards in the field.

Contrary to actual belief, the sound of an instrument only plays a minor role in determining it's value. Although sound is the most important aspect for a musician, the ever subjective notion of "sound" prohibits an objective appraisal of it's value.
